An alumni from Lake Havasu High School, Rita Bybee, spoke with us at one of our HOSA meetings. She took us through the pre-med adventure consisting of all the steps in order to be successful in pursuing a medical career. Rita described each of the four years and what to have completed.

The first year is to select a major and develop relationships with your professors. Volunteer and get involved in the community and on campus as well. Create a “macro” plan, shadow over the summer and start looking for medical schools.

Your second year is to continue maintaining your grades and involvement. Adjust your “macro” plan. Seek out internships.

Then the third year is establishing your personal statement which needs many reviews by family, friends and professors. Now comes the really hard part… time to start studying for MCAT. You will need 300-400 hours of studying.

Finally, the fourth year, maintain all volunteering, grades and good relations with all professors. Take a leadership role in a club on campus to prepare yourself for a career. Continue researching med schools and attend any pre-med conferences or activities. Then comes interview season!
